Smriti Mandhana smashes fastest ODI hundred by an Indian woman in 70 balls against Ireland

Smriti Mandhana got the 2025 season off to a superb start as she smashed her 10th ODI century in only 70 balls, marking the fastest hundred by Indian womanin the third ODI against Ireland at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.

The stand-in India captain broke the record of regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur who had previously recorded a century in 87 balls against South Africa in Bengaluru last year. Mandhana’s 70-ball ton ranks the join-eighth on the all-time charts with former Australia captain Meg Lanning topping the charts with her 45-ball century in 2012.

Mandhana also became the first Indian woman to record 10 ODI centuries and only the third opener in WODIs to achieve the landmark. Only Lanning (15), Suzie Bates (13) have recorded more ODI centuries than India’s dashing southpaw.

Mandhana is carrying the form from a stupendous ODI season in 20224 where she aggregated over 700 runs in 13 innings with a record four centuries. The previous record for the most centuries in a calendar year in women’s ODIs was three, shared by 7 other batters, including the South African captain Laura Wolvaardt this year. The others with three tons in a year are Meg Lanning (2016), Nat Sciver-Brunt (2023), Sophie Devine (2018), Sidra Amin (2022), Amy Satterthwaite (2016), Belinda Clark (1997).

In the home series against South Africa earlier in 2024, Mandhana became the first Asian woman to compile consecutive ODI tons with New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite leading the charts, having struck four successive centuries in 2016-17. In a series-winning performance recently against New Zealand, she scored her third century of 2024, and in the process went past Mithali Raj for most centuries by an Indian in this format.

Mandhana eventually holed out on 135 off 80 balls after setting a record 233-run home ODI partnership with Pratika Rawal for the opening wicket.
