Just a few hours after the Election Commission announced the dates for the Delhi Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday extended his support to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party for the upcoming polls in the city. 

Following this, the former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal thanked Akhilesh Yadav for the support. “Thank you very much Akhilesh ji. You always support and stand with us. I and the people of Delhi are grateful for this,” he wrote in a post on X.

This is not the first time that Yadav has backed AAP. Last month, he joined Kejriwal’s ‘Mahila Adalat’ campaign in the national capital and stated that the AAP should  be given yet another chance to work for the people of Delhi. “Ye AAP ka jo ayojan ho raha hai uske liye main bahut bahut badhai deta hoon (On his event organized by AAP, I want to congratulate everyone),” Akhilesh had said.

“Jitna AAP sarkar ne kaam kiya hai … utna hi hum mehsoos karte hain ki apko ek bar phir yahan kaam karne ka mauqua milna chahiye (The way the AAP government has worked, we feel that they should get another chance to work here),” he added.

Meanwhile, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to contest the Delhi Assembly elections independently. The BSP had contested all the 70 seats in the previous Delhi polls in 2020, but could not win any. 

As per the schedule released by the Election Commission on Tuesday, the Delhi Assembly election will take place in a single phase on February 5. Counting of votes will be done on February 8. The national capital is set to witness a high-stakes three-cornered contest between the ruling AAP, BJP, and Congress.

The AAP has been winning the elections since the past two years, with Arvind Kejriwal being elected as the Chief Minister in both 2015 and 2020.
