CBI Grills TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh For 7 Hours Over Alleged Calls With Sandip Ghosh

Kolkata News: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh for nearly seven hours on Monday in connection with their ongoing probe into the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. Nirmal Ghosh, who represents Panihati in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, arrived at the CBI’s CGO Complex in Salt Lake at around 10:30 am.

According to news agency PTI, Officials stated that the CBI also questioned Professor Apurba Biswas from the hospital’s forensic department regarding the case. The incident took place on August 9 when the victim was reportedly raped and murdered inside the state-run hospital.

Speaking to reporters after the questioning, MLA Nirmal Ghosh said, “I had certain things to tell the investigating officers, and they needed to know a few things from me. I was at the RG Kar Hospital as an MLA. She was a doctor from my constituency. I want the criminals to be hanged. I also want justice for her. She was a brilliant girl.”

A CBI officer disclosed that Nirmal Ghosh is suspected of playing a key role in facilitating the hasty final rites of the deceased doctor. “We summoned him for questioning as he was seen at the hospital and other locations, including the crematorium on that day,” the official remarked, as quoted by PTI.

The CBI’s investigation has reportedly uncovered call records showing communication between Nirmal Ghosh and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, on August 9. The officer added, “We have got the call details and found that there were talks between the arrested ex-principal of the RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh and Nirmal Ghosh on August 9. We need to know the details of their conversations.”

Thus far, three individuals, including Sandip Ghosh, have been arrested in connection with the case. In a separate development on Monday, a local court extended the judicial remand of Sandip Ghosh and three others until October 7 in a financial irregularities case related to the hospital.

RG Kar Financial Scam Case: Sandip Ghosh, 3 Others IJudicial Custody Extended

A special court in Kolkata on Monday sent former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh and three others—Afsar Ali, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha—to judicial custody until October 7, news agency IANS reported. Ali served as Sandip Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, while Hazra and Sinha are business owners who supplied medical equipment and medicines to the hospital.

The CBI’s counsel informed the court that digital cloning of 18 electronic devices seized during the investigation—including mobile phones, laptops, hard drives, and memory cards—has been completed. These devices are currently being examined, with officials expecting further evidence to emerge, IANS’ report stated.

Sandip Ghosh and the three others were initially arrested by the CBI on August 19 for their involvement in financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. Ghosh has also been shown as “arrested” in connection with the rape-murder case.

Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a parallel investigation into the matter, having filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR). The ED’s probe is independent, while the CBI’s investigation remains court-directed and monitored.

Both agencies have reportedly gathered incriminating documents, conducted multiple raids, and questioned several individuals as part of their investigations into the irregularities at RG Kar Medical College.

The main accusations against Sandip Ghosh include manipulating the tendering process at R.G. Kar to make room for ineligible suppliers or contractors, bypassing the norms for giving infrastructure-related work orders, smuggling bio-medical wastes and organs of unidentified bodies coming at the hospital morgue.
