Chennai news: Southern Tamil Nadu experienced relentless rainfall on Wednesday with Rameswaram Island recording an extraordinary 411mm of rain within just ten hours, according to the Ramanathapuram district administration. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this deluge to a cloudburst over the region, with Pamban alone receiving 19 cm of rainfall in just three hours between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm.

On Wednesday, the IMD had issued a red alert for Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Theni, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari were placed under an orange alert, with warnings of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall.

Waterlogging In Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi

Following the heavy rainfall, many parts of Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi experienced waterlogging especially in low-lying areas. 

Urban and suburban areas of Thoothukudi have reported severe waterlogging due to the incessant downpour. Localities such as Rajagopal Nagar, Pushpa Nagar, Raju Nagar and Postal Telegram Colony are among the worst affected. Residents in these areas are struggling as rainwater inundates streets and homes.

Cyclonic Circulation 

The IMD also highlighted the potential formation of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining areas around November 21. This is expected to develop into a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 23, which may intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the subsequent two days.

For November 25, the IMD forecast isolated heavy rains in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram districts, and the Karaikal region. It also predicted thunderstorms with lightning in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as heavy rains and potential cyclonic activity loom over the state.
