India vs Bangladesh, 1st Test, Day 2 key takeaways: Rohit’s dismal show vs BAN, Kohli’s luck runs out, Hasan’s feat

India vs Bangladesh, 1st Test, Day 2: Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t add much more runs to the Indian scoreboard after their day 1 heroics with the duo ultimately getting dismissed for 117 and 86 respectively with India scoring 376 in the first innings.

Bangladesh would come out bat next and would be skittled out for 149 in the same day by a fiery Indian bowling lineup where Jasprit Bumrah took 4 wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Akash deep and Ravindra Jadeja took 2 apiece.

As India started their second innings, Rohit Sharma’s rough patch continued while Yashasvi Jaiswal could not replicate his composure from the first innings, with both getting dismissed with the team total being just 28. Virat Kohli would follow suit while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant would guide India to the end of the day with the score being 81/3.

Here are the key takeaways from the second day’s play at Chepauk:

Rohit Sharma fails again

The Indian skipper’s form took another nosedive when he could not get a big score in the second innings as well after getting out 5, 1 shy of his 1st innings’ score of 6 runs. If look at the numbers Rohit has against Bangladesh in recent Tests, it becomes worrying with the India captain having an average of just 8.80 runs in 5 innings against the Bangla Tigers.

Virat Kohli’s bad luck continues

Kohli started his second innings in a cautious manner, playing anchor to Gill scoring 17 runs off 33 balls with just 2 boundaries. But he was snagged by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and given out LBW. After a discussion with Gill, the former India skipper opted not to take a review and walked back. But later, it was shown on TV that there was a spike on UltraEdge which would suggest an inside-edge.

Festive offer

India bowlers on song

Just like their Bangladesh counterparts on the first day, the Indian bowlers were also on song with the Jasprit Bumrah led pace trio accounting for 8 wickets. The veteran Shakib Al Hasan was the batter to top score for Bangladesh with 32 ultimately falling to Jadeja who took 2 wickets as well. With his 4-fer, Bumrah also crossed another milestone in a career filled with them when he reached 400 international wickets.

Hasan Mahmud creates history

After taking 4 wickets in the opening day of the Chepauk Test where he singlehandedly broke the back of
the Indian top order with the scalps of Rohit, Gill, Kohli and KL Rahul, Mahmud would add another feather to his on the second day. With his wicket of Bumrah, Mahmud became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take a 5-wicket haul on Indian soil.

Gill’s redemption arc

Gill came to bat in the second innings with a chip on his shoulder after scoring a duck in the first innings. With something to prove to himself and all his naysayers, the Indian batter would play a spirited knock of 33, staying unbeaten going into the third day. If he can turn this into a big score on the 3rd day remains to be seen.
