The Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, will have a Leader of the Opposition after about 10 years. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is at the forefront. This will be the first time that the Congress, since its ouster from power in 2014, will get the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. It failed to get the position in the past 10 years as its tally was below the requisite 10 per cent of total seats in the House, both in 2014 and 2019. The Lok Sabha speaker will be elected by consensus. The chances of election for the post of Speaker are considered very less. According to sources, the opposition will not field candidates. The opposition is waiting for the name from the ruling party to come forward for the post of Speaker. According to sources in the opposition alliance, if the government takes the initiative, the opposition can agree to decide the speaker by consensus.
