The Winter Session of Parliament is set to begin on Monday, promising to be a stormy affair as the opposition, led by the Congress, prepares to raise several contentious issues, including bribery allegations against the Adani Group, ethnic violence in Manipur, and severe pollution in northern India.

Govt Demands Smooth Winter Session, Congress Pushes For Early Debate On Adani Issue

The opposition on Sunday urged the Centre to allow Parliament to discuss the bribery allegations against the Adani Group, brought forward by US prosecutors. However, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasised that the agenda for both Houses would be determined by their respective business advisory committees, with approval from the presiding officers.

According to a report by PTI, speaking after an all-party meeting held ahead of the Winter Session starting Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju appealed to all parties to ensure the smooth functioning of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh, saw the participation of 42 leaders from 30 parties.

Addressing the Congress’ insistence on prioritising a discussion on the Adani issue alongside other matters like the unrest in Manipur, Rijiju reiterated that the decision on parliamentary business rests with the committees, in consultation with the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, labelled the Adani issue a “scam” and argued that the government must not sideline the matter on procedural grounds, as it impacts national institutions and investors.

Gogoi also raised concerns about the Manipur violence, criticizing the government for taking actions against leaders in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir while continuing to support Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh despite allegations of involvement in the unrest.

During the meeting, two BJP allies from Andhra Pradesh – Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena Party – raised the issue of pending promises that were made during the division of the state in 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, saying the Parliament must know their present status.
