Maha Kumbh Stampede: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to review the situation after a stampede at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on the second Amrit Snan day on Wednesday. The Prime Minister called for immediate support measures.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with CM Adityanatha and assured him of all possible help from the Centre. Shah had gone to Kumbh Mela to take a holy dip just two days ago.
Around 10 people are feared dead in the stampede that occurred around 1 am on Wednesday after some barriers broke, leading to injuries, according to Special Executive Officer Akanksha Rana. However, she said the situation was not serious.
Nearly 5 crore people reached the Maha Kumbh Mela on Tuesday and the Mauni Amavasya is expected to attract around 10 crore people on Wednesday. This year, the event holds additional spiritual significance due to a rare celestial alignment called ‘Triveni Yog,’ which occurs once every 144 years.
A devotee told ABP News that a few police personnel were there at the spot, but the number was not enough. “The police could not anticipate the crowd. They had no control. Had they been prepared, this could have been prevented,” he said.
