Ruturaj Gaikwad named skipper in ROI team in Irani Trophy clash vs Mumbai

The Rest of India squad was announced on Tuesday which will take on the 2023/24 Ranji champions Mumbai in the Irani Trophy, scheduled to start from October 1 and go on till October 5.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was named captain of the ROI team while Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal who are currently with Team India as they prepare for the second Test against Bangladesh, have also been included in the ROI squad. The duo will be released from India duty and join their Irani team if they are not selected in the playing XI of the 2nd Test.

“Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been selected in the Rest of India squad and their participation is subject to them not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur,” the BCCI said.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane will feature for Mumbai team.

As reported by the Indian Express, Sarfaraz Khan, who is also part of the Indian team against Bangladesh, was released. The second Test kicks off on September 27. It is learnt that if Khan doesn’t play the Test, the selection committee will release Mumbai’s middle-order batsman on the third day of the game. The MCA selection committee will be picking its squad on Tuesday.

Thakur will be playing his first domestic game after recovering from a foot surgery. He had undergone the treatment in London this June. His injury resurfaced during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.
