T20 World Cup, India vs New Zealand: Here’s why Harmanpreet Kaur was unhappy after run out controversy involving Amelia Kerr

In a bizarre incident, Amelia Kerr was given not out despite being short of her crease as on-filed umpires had already declared the ball dead during India’s match against New Zealand in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday.

Here’s what unfolded

Kerr slapped the ball down to long-off for a single. India captain Harmanpreet picked up the ball, and took a few steps into the circle with the ball in hand but not throwing. Devine saw it from the wicketkeeper’s end and called Kerr for a second run.

However, in the meantime, the umpire had handed over the cap to the bowler Deepti Sharma, which usually signals end of the over. The second run was a bad call from the New Zealand skipper and Harman quickly realised what was happening and threw a bullet effort to the keeper’s end, where Richa Ghosh whipped the bails in a flash and Kerr was caught well short.

The New Zealand all-rounder started walking back to the dressing room before the umpires intervened. They indicated that was a dead ball, so the review doesn’t come in.

It follows with an animated chat between Harmanpreet Kaur and the on-field umpires, where the Indian captain indicates that she was throwing the ball only because the New Zealand batters took the run but the animated argument from her doesn’t work.

Team India head coach Amol Muzumdar was also not happy with the decision and was seen having a long and animated chat with the fourth umpire.

Festive offer

The on-field umpires were adamant that the over was called and Amelia Kerr survived.

However, Kerr was out in the next over, out caught at cover by Vastrakar off Renuka’s bowling. It was followed y a big animated celebration from the Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was at mid-off.
