India suffered a crushing 113-run defeat to New Zealand in the second Test in Pune, dropping crucial ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points and also conceding their first Test series defeat on home soil since 2012.
Saturday’s loss was the first time India endured consecutive defeats to New Zealand at home. The BlackCaps have become only the third team after Australia (2004) and England (2012) to record a Test series win in India in the 21st century (since January 1, 2001).
India’s WTC Final qualification scenarios explained
India’s WTC points PCT slipped down from 68.06 to 62.82, holding only a marginal lead over defending champions Australia, who are placed with a PCT of 62.5. India have six more matches this cycle, one against New Zealand in Mumbai and five in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
On Day 2, India were bowled out for 156 in reply to New Zealand’s 259. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner wreaked havoc with his career-best figures of 7/53. The visitors then set up a 359-run target on the back of captain Tom Latham’s 86. While Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a strong start to the chase, India were eventually dismissed for a harrowing series defeat.
Rohit Sharma’s side cannot afford another loss or more than one draw in their remaining games to reach the WTC final on their own terms.
