The Cabinet has given the green light to continue the supply of free fortified rice under the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKAY) and other welfare programs from July 2024 to December 2028. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the total cost of this initiative will amount to ₹17,082 crore, which will be borne by the central government. He stated that the primary objective of this move is to promote development and enhance nutritional security in the country. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for vulnerable populations while simultaneously addressing malnutrition and supporting economic growth through sustained welfare measures.
