A fire broke out on July 19 aboard a merchant navy ship while it was on its way from Mundra in Gujarat to Colombo in Sri Lanka.
The ship, MV Maersk Frankfurt, was carrying 1,154 containers, including some with dangerous cargo like benzene and sodium cyanate.
The Indian Coast Guard sprayed dry chemical powder through helicopters on Saturday, which helped in controlling the blaze.
While one of the ship’s 22 crew members died, the Coast Guard said there was no immediate danger to anyone else on the vessel.
The Indian Coast Guard said such fires take 3-4 days to be put out completely, and even then the area remains heated, which is something crew members should keep a watch on.
